Dr. Umashankar completed his graduation and post-graduation from Madras Medical College, one of the most reputed medical institutes in India. He has also passed the Diplomate of National Board of Examination (DNB), India and Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from Glasgow, UK.
Dr. Umashankar did Fellowship training in anterior segment, oculoplasty and paediatric ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya, which is one the largest tertiary eye care centres in India. He continued to work as a consultant in Trauma, Oculoplasty and Cataract Service at Sankara Nethralaya for four years. He also undertook several clinical attachments in hospitals in the UK such as Leicester Royal Infirmary and Burnley General Hospital before joining as Medical Director at Bhagwan Mahaveer Eye Hospital in Chennai, India. There he was instrumental in setting up the hospital and running it for three years as well as being an expert cataract surgeon. He has worked as Senior Specialist Ophthalmologist and later as Consultant at Welcare centre and Al Bashayer Centre in Oman. From there he joined Vasan Eye Care India, and worked there for three years before taking over as Medical Director at Vasan Eye Care Dubai. He has performed around 10000 procedures in his 19 years of ophthalmic practice.
