After qualifying from the Royal Free Hospital and School of Medicine in 1991, Dr Hami undertook a medical rotation followed by two years in Anaesthesia. From an early stage in her career, the patient and carer experience was important to her, and that’s where her interest in Palliative Medicine started.
Dr Hami completed the North London Palliative Medicine training scheme in 2002 and was appointed as a Consultant at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust the same year. Since being appointed, she took on the role of Clinical Lead for the Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team: departmental governance lead and has provided clinical palliative care, including access to 24/7 consultant-led palliative care advice, seven day working, and consultant delivered on-call. Dr Hami also consulted patients in their own homes, and worked at Florence Nightingale House hospice in Aylesbury, as well as running an outpatient palliative care clinic.
In 2019, Dr Hami was part of the leadership team awarded “Outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission for delivery of End of Life Care at Buckinghamshire NHS Trust.
Dr Hami has also worked in the private sector in the UK and held practising privileges with the BMI Hospital Group in Buckinghamshire, and King Edward VII Hospital in London
During her 22-year career as a Palliative Care Consultant, she has undertaken senior clinical management roles: she was the Trust Cancer Lead for four years; the Clinical Director for Specialist Services for six years (including Clinical support services, Women’s and Children’s and the National Spinal Injuries Centre). For three years, she also chaired the Thames Valley Palliative and Support Services Network, leading the implementation of, and compliance with, National Standards.
Dr Hami is committed to medical education, and has been an educational and clinical supervisor, is a trained coach and mentor, and a medical appraiser. She was also a question writer for the specialty exam in Palliative Medicine, and an examiner for the PLAB Part 2 Exam for overseas graduates.
However, her main focus and passion remains with patient care. She is a champion for the patient voice, whilst recognising the importance of including families and carers in decisions. Dr Hami’s work ethos is to strive for the provision of the best possible holistic care, regardless of where the patient is situated: at home, in a hospital, a care home or any other environment. She believes in working alongside the multi-disciplinary team fully to achieve what is important for the patient, and will liaise with her colleagues in oncology, pain management, interventional radiology, allied health, nursing and others in order to optimise the patient management plan.
Dr Hami delivers symptom control, psychological and emotional support, as well as helping patients to discuss their wishes for future care (Advance Care Planning)
