Summary
Dr Syed Mustafa is a Senior Interventional Radiologist with vast experience in image-guided, endovascular, percutaneous body and oncology interventions.
He has previously worked in the NHS for more than nineteen years and recently at the American Hospital Dubai for two years.
He did his undergraduate medical degree from Bangalore University in India. He initially underwent surgical training and obtained MRCS (Edinburgh) and the CCBST (UK) before entering the specialist radiology training at the National Imaging Academy Wales, UK.
He successfully completed FRCR (London) and did subspecialist complex vascular interventional radiology training at the Leicester Vascular Institute and University Hospitals of Leicester Interventional Radiology department.
Dr Mustafa has received dual accreditation from The General Medical Council, UK with Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) in Diagnostic Radiology along with sub-specialisation in the field of Interventional Radiology (IR).
He worked as a Consultant in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Leicester Vascular Institute and the University Hospitals of Leicester, one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK with more than 2000 beds.
Leicester Vascular Institute has pioneered several vascular interventional radiology procedures such as the well-known sub-intimal angioplasty technique and the aortic endovascular graft.
Dr Mustafa particularly enjoys exploring innovative technologies and challenges to improve future patient-care and treatment options. He has participated in several research projects including the BASIL3 and PAVE. He has many international presentations and publications to his credit.
He is highly focused on patient safety and quality improvement, and was the IR lead for Vascular access and the Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) lead for Body Intervention at Leicester.
Dr Mustafa has extensive experience in endovascular procedures including peripheral, visceral arterial and aortic interventions. He particularly enjoys complex embolisations (including chemo-embolisation and radio-embolisation) as well as the ablation therapy. He has a special niche at venous access interventions and has developed complex venous recanalisation techniques and also mentored his consultant colleagues in this area.
Dr Mustafa has a keen interest in education and mentorship of his juniors, including the under-graduate and post-graduate medical training in the UK.
He has been a Royal College of Radiology (RCR) Educational Supervisor for senior radiology and foundation trainees.
He has taught in various FRCR courses within the UK and abroad and has also been a faculty on several Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Anaesthesia courses. He is a medical examiner and an interviewer for Leicester Medical School.
