Summary
Dr Suneel Pooboni was awarded his MD from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India in 1987. After a brief career in India and Saudi Arabia, he continued his further education in the UK, leading to CCT in Paediatrics and Paediatric Critical Care. He undertook his PICU training at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK and also a fellowship in Paediatric Critical Care from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. After pursuing a career spanning over two decades in the UK as a senior consultant in Paediatric Critical Care and Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation at the University Hospitals of Leicester and abroad, he moved to India to establish a paediatric critical care unit with ECMO facilities. Having successfully completed the project, he moved back to the UK. Prior to joining Mediclinic, he worked for over two years establishing the paediatric critical care unit at Mafraq Hospital (now Shaik Shakbout Medical City), Abu Dhabi. Currently, he is Head of the department of Paediatric Critical cCre at Mediclinic Airport Road Hospital, UAE.
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, UK , fellow of the College of Chest Physicians, USA and fellow of American College of Critical Care Medicine, USA. He was the past chairman of the ECMO Society of India and South Asia-West Asia chapter of Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). He held concurrent positions as Chairman of the Infection control committee, member of the antibiotic stewardship program and ethics and research committees in his past appointments. He published over 23 scientific papers in various International journals and books. He was Professor of Paediatrics at Gulf Medical University. He is Associate Professor (Clinical Adjunct) at Mohamed Bin Rashid University, Dubai.

Dr Suneel has extensive experience in providing critical care support to children of all age groups (newborn, infants and children) up to the age of 18 years with the following conditions: Unwell children, acute and chronic respiratory illnesses, congenital and acquired heart problems, pulmonary hypertension, pre- and post-operative cardiac surgery, those with infections, neurological problems including recurrent fits, renal failure needing kidney support (CRRT), plasmaphresis, jaundice indicating liver failure, children requiring intensive care support following complicated surgical procedures, (paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery). He specialised in providing extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support to children and adults. He worked extensively in delivering safe care to children with severe burns and polytrauma, metabolic disorders and complex congenital malformations.

He believes, practices and teaches the importance of looking after and supporting families. He has trained generations of doctors and nurses in the practice of paediatric critical care and ECMO.
