They have generally completed extensive further training in Family Medicine in addition to their general medical degree. They provide management of chronic diseases, as well paediatric care and preventative health monitoring and screening.
When a patient’s condition requires treatment outside the usual practice of family medicine, the family medicine practitioner will refer the patient to a specialist who works with both the patient and the family medicine specialist to resolve or manage the issue
