Clear Fluid Diet
The clear fluid diet is usually offered after certain surgeries or when your digestive tract needs rest, as the clear fluids will not leave any residue in your digestive tract. A clear fluid diet usually lasts for only 24 - 48 hours, but may be longer if required by your medical condition. Water, tea and coffee (preferably decaffeinated), clear broth, jelly and clear juices such as apple juice and cranberry juice, will be included on the clear fluid diet.
Full Fluid Diet
The full fluid diet consists of a variety of fluids. You may be placed on this diet after certain surgeries or when your digestive tract needs rest. Water, tea, coffee, milk, yogurt, soups, juices and smoothies will be offered.
Soft Diet
The soft ward diet will provide meals which are soft in texture and moist, compared to the normal ward diet. A soft diet is often prescribed after certain surgeries, including surgeries of the digestive tract. The soft diet needs less chewing and allows for easy swallowing.
Diabetic Diet
The diabetic ward diet will help to promote stable blood sugar levels throughout your hospital admission. A diabetic diet includes a whole range of wholegrain products with a low Glycemic Index, fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products and lean meats. Portions of carbohydrates are also controlled as consuming large amounts can affect your sugar levels. Fried foods and foods high in excess sugars such as soft drinks, juices, refined cereals, cakes and chocolates are best avoided. The desserts and baked snacks served with the diabetic diet are prepared with recipes that have been adjusted in the amount on refined sugar, as well as prepared with vegetable oil, rather than butter.

Cardiac Diet
The cardiac ward diet will provide you with meals which will help to promote a healthy heart and vascular system. You will receive meals which are low in fat, low in salt, and contains high fiber foods such as wholegrain products, fruit and vegetables. This diet restricts the intake of saturated fats such as fatty cuts of meats, full fat dairy products, butter and fried foods which can affect your cholesterol levels. As this diet is also low in salt, it will help lower your blood pressure and keep it under control. The desserts and baked snacks served with the cardiac diet are prepared with recipes that have been adjusted in the amount on refined sugar, as well as prepared with vegetable oil, rather than butter.
Please note that you may also be placed on the cardiac diet if you have a condition which requires you to restrict either your fat intake, salt intake, or both.

Renal Diet
The renal ward diet will help control the build-up of waste products and fluid in your body which will minimize the workload on the kidneys and preserve their function. A renal diet limits the intake of salt (sodium), phosphorus and potassium - therefore, foods that contain high amounts of these minerals are restricted. These will exclude certain fruits and vegetables such as bananas, oranges, tomatoes, pumpkin and potatoes. You will also receive only small servings of dairy products, beans and legumes.
Your protein intake will also be regulated on this diet. If you are not on dialysis, then your protein intake should be controlled and a high protein intake should be avoided. If you are on dialysis, then your protein requirements increase and you will receive a diet high in protein.

Light Gastric Diet
The light ward diet will provide meals which are easy to digest, and may therefore be prescribed after bowel surgery, when the bowel needs rest during a flare-up of inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis, or during gastroenteritis where diarrhea is present. The light diet is usually needed for short term management of your condition only.
The light diet is observed as very plain, as it is low in fiber, low in fat and free from spicy- and typically gas-forming foods, which will help to promote best toleration of solid food, and the least amount of abdominal discomfort. Please note that milk will be served on this diet. If you are experiencing symptoms of lactose-intolerance, such as abdominal discomfort, flatulence or diarrhea, milk should be taken in small quantities at a time; or choose our lactose-free alternatives on the menu such as soya- or almond milk.
