Summary
Dr Al-Hilou is a fully UK-trained Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, CCT certified.

His clinical practice includes all aspects of Gastroenterology including Hepatology, Endoscopy and Cancer screening, Biliary disease, Functional Bowel disease, Dyspepsia and Acid Reflux.

Areas of specialist expertise include Inflammatory Bowel disease and clinical nutrition.
Dr Al-Hilou completed all his stages of medical training, both undergraduate and postgraduate in the UK where he practiced for 16 years. He graduated from the University of Leicester with merit in 2002 and completed his House Officer and Medical SHO rotation in Leicester where he obtained his MRCP (UK) in 2006.

Dr Al-Hilou achieved his higher specialist qualifications in Gastroenterology through training in 3 tertiary centres of excellence in the UK, gaining specialist expertise in managing complex gastrointestinal cases through training in the Intestinal Transplant Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, the Liver Transplant Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and in Inflammatory Bowel disease at Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London. He completed his higher specialist rotation in the South London Deanery gaining his CCT with dual accreditation in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in 2014. He also obtained his MRCP in Gastroenterology.

Prior to joining Mediclinic City Hospital, Dr Al-Hilou practiced at Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital in London for 5 years, the last 4 of which as a substantive Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist. He headed the specialist expertise area of Clinical Nutrition, covering the full spectrum of intestinal failure and led the hospital nutrition service with both enteral and parenteral components. He also has a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and was involved in clinical governance, research and developed multiple guidelines during his time at the trust for IBD.

Dr Al-Hilou has numerous peer-reviewed international publications and his research has been presented at various international meetings. His research includes a wide variety of topics including Hepatology, IBD, Nutrition, and Dyspepsia. He is also actively involved in teaching and training junior doctors and has acted as an organiser for the Royal College of Physicians exams, taught medical students at Kings College London and has gained certification as a JAG Endoscopy Trainer.

From a procedural standpoint Dr Al-Hilou is UK JAG accredited and certified in Upper GI
Endoscopy and Colonoscopy, including Polypectomy. He is certified in small bowel video capsule Endoscopy. Therapeutically he is trained in all GI bleed treatment modalities. Other endoscopic treatment modalities offered include botox injections and balloon dilatations.

Dr Al-Hilou believes in providing the highest quality, patient centred and evidence based
clinical care to his patients. He involves patients in all aspects of care and tailors treatments individually, based on individual clinical need and in line with international guidelines. His approach is holistic, transparent and compassionate.
