Dr Abou-Rayyah graduated from Cairo University. He received the British Chevening Award and finished his training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He has been working as a consultant ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeon for more than 25 years and joined Moorfield Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children 20 years ago as the Lead of the Paediatric Oculoplastic & Orbital Surgery unit between these hospitals. He has performed 15570 ophthalmic and oculoplastic operations over the last 25 years.

Dr Abou-Rayyah has extensive involvement in medical research supervising seven postgraduate medical research degrees and publishing more than 50 pieces of research in national and international medical journals. He has been invited as guest speaker in many national and international medical conferences.
