AMYVID PET SCAN

PATIENT INSTRUCTION

Your doctor has recommended that you have an Amyvid PET scan to evaluate you for possible Alzheimer's disease and other causes of cognitive decline. Amyvid is an imaging agent used to estimate the density of beta-amyloid plaque in the brain, which is an indicator of Alzheimer's disease.

BEFORE YOUR EXAM

  • If you cannot keep this appointment, please inform the department at least 24-hours before.
  • Please be on time for your appointment and please understand if you are late, we may be unable to carry out the examination.
  • Please make sure no children and pregnant ladies accompany you on this visit.
  • If your doctor gave you an order, please bring it with you.
  • We want to make your waiting time as pleasant as possible. Consider bringing your favourite magazine, book or music player to help you pass the time.
  • Please leave your jewellery and valuables at home.
  • There are no other pre-exam instructions.

DURING YOUR EXAM

  • Upon arrival, the technologist will explain your procedure and answer any questions you may have.
  • You will receive an intravenous injection (in your vein) of a tracer dose of radioactive material.
  • The level of radioactivity is extremely low and has no side effects.
  • Approximately 30 minutes to one hour later, you will be brought into the exam room for the scan.
  • Your scan will take approximately 20 minutes.
  • During this time, you will be required to lie flat on your back without moving.
  • Using a special nuclear medicine camera, pictures of your brain will be obtained. The camera does not produce any radiation; it simply detects and records the distribution of the radioactive material in your brain.

AFTER YOUR EXAM

  • The radioactive material you received is a very low dose and is of a very short duration, so your body will clear the material rapidly afterwards. You can be around other people and use bathroom facilities.
  • Your test results will be sent to the physician who ordered the test. During your follow-up appointment, your physician will discuss with you the results of your test.

HEPATOBILIARY (GALLBLADDER) SCAN

HEPATOBILIARY (GALLBLADDER) SCAN

PATIENT INSTRUCTION

Your doctor has ordered a hepatobiliary scan. The role of this procedure is to diagnose inflammation of the gallbladder, a blockage of the bile duct, complications from gallbladder surgery, or follow up on a liver transplant. A hepatobiliary scan may also be used to evaluate other gallbladder abnormalities. 

BEFORE ARRIVING FOR YOUR EXAM

  • If you cannot keep this appointment, please inform the department at least 24-hours before.
  • Please be on time for your appointment and please understand if you are late, we may be unable to carry out the examination.
  • Please make sure no children and pregnant ladies accompany you on this visit.
  • Have nothing to eat or drink, except water, four to six hours before the test.
  • Please DO eat your evening meal the day before the test; it is important that you eat the day before the test.
  • If you have been unable to take food and fluids for 24 hours before the test, tell the technologist. It might be necessary to give you medication before the imaging injection.
  • Some narcotic (pain killer) medications affect the test and must be stopped 4-12 hours before the test.
  • If you are taking narcotic medications, inform your physician before your appointment date.
  • Please bring all your previous medical records with you.
  • Tell your physician and the nuclear medicine technologist if you have had surgery on your gallbladder.
  • If you are or might be pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding, please call us and let us know right away.
  • You MUST bring someone with you to drive you home after the test.
  • If your doctor gave you an order, please bring it with you.

DURING YOUR EXAM

  • You will have an IV catheter (plastic needle with tubing) placed into a vein in your arm.
  • You will receive an injection through the IV catheter. There are no side effects, and you should not feel ill.
  • After the injection, you will lay on your back for about two hours while a scanner creates pictures based on the radioactivity administered.
  • You may be asked to return to Nuclear Medicine up to four hours later for more imaging.
  • Sometimes patients are given medications during the test to help direct the radioactivity to the gallbladder. The technologist will ask if you are allergic to any medicine before it is given.
  • You must remain as still as possible during the picture-taking process.
  • If you have

You will be restricted from driving after the test and the remainder of the test day.

  • You may resume eating and drinking after the test and may take your medications.

BONE SCAN

BONE SCAN

PATIENT INSTRUCTION

Your doctor has recommended that you receive a bone scan. The role of this procedure is to evaluate your bones to detect arthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, sports injuries, or other bone abnormalities. Bone scans may also be used to evaluate unexplained bone pain.

BEFORE ARRIVING FOR YOUR EXAM

  • If you cannot keep this appointment, please inform the department at least 24-hours before.
  • Please be on time for your appointment and please understand if you are late, we may be unable to carry out the examination.
  • Please make sure no children and pregnant ladies accompany you on this visit.
  • Please bring all your previous medical records with you.
  • If your doctor gave you an order, please bring it with you.
  • If you are or might be pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, please call us and let us know right away.

  • There is otherwise no special preparation for this test; eat, drink and take medications as normal.

  • If you are an outpatient, you may leave the medical center during the three-hour delay.
  • Once you are ready, the scan will take approximately one hour.
  • During that time you will be required to lie flat on your back, without moving.
  • Using a special nuclear medicine camera, pictures of your bones will be obtained.

BRAIN SPECT SCAN

Your doctor has ordered a brain SPECT scan. The role of this procedure is to diagnose Alzheimer's and other neuro-degenerative diseases, stroke, seizure, and to evaluate memory loss.

  • You may be asked to return for a comparison scan, called a Diamox brain SPECT scan, between two to 14 days after your initial scan. Diamox is a drug which increases the blood flow to the brain. A comparison of the baseline brain scan with a Diamox brain scan provides helpful information to your physician about the blood flow to your brain.
  • Your test results will be sent to the physician who ordered the test. During your follow-up appointment, your physician will discuss with you the results of your test.
