What is the Gut Microbiome?

The gut microbiome is a complex community of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. These microorganisms play a crucial role in digestion, immune function, mental health and overall well-being. They help break down food, produce essential nutrients, and protect against harmful pathogens. Maintaining a balanced gut microbiome is vital for optimal health and well-being. A dysfunctional gut microbiome can lead to many chronic diseases so it is essential that we keep our microbiome healthy.

How to Improve Gut Health?

Advanced genetic sequencing provides a deep understanding of the richness and diversity of the microorganisms in your gut and enables the provision of personalised dietary and other lifestyle recommendations to optimise your health and well-being.

It all begins with identifying the microbes in your gut.  At Mediclinic our Gut Microbiome Health Package includes:

  • Genetic Sequencing: utilizes state-of-the-art genetic sequencing to identify all the bacteria in your gut.
  • Microbiome assessment: Assesses the diversity and richness of your microbiome..
  • AI-driven personalisation: Creates a personalised meal plan using AI-driven software to optimise health and well-being, and to support weight management.
  • Tailored recommendations: Enables our registered dietitians to provide personalised recommendations based on your detailed microbiome information.

As the gut microbiome is a dynamic ecosystem, you can request to have your microbiome retested at a later stage (for an additional fee) to monitor your improvement.

Gut Microbiome’s impact on your health

The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in influencing overall health and can impact conditions such as:

  • Diabetes: Imbalances in gut bacteria may contribute to insulin resistance and glucose metabolism, influencing the development and management of diabetes.
  • Weight loss: Certain gut bacteria affect metabolism, hunger signals and inflammation, which can impact weight management.
  • Fatty liver disease: Dysbiosis in the gut microbiome can promote liver inflammation and fat accumulation, contributing to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  • Crohn's disease: The microbiome plays a role in inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's, where imbalances in gut bacteria may exacerbate symptoms and inflammation.
  • Mental health: The gut microbiome produces and interacts with various compounds, including neurotransmitters like serotonin (your “happy” hormone), playing crucial roles in regulating moods and emotions.

Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through dietary changes, making other lifestyle adjustments and taking prebiotics and probiotics is crucial for supporting your overall health. If more severe gastrointestinal issues are detected by the test, referral to a gastroenterologist will be made for further investigation.

GUT MICROBIOME PACKAGE FOR WELLNESS

What is my gut microbiome?

Your intestines (gut) contain trillions of microbes such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. This community of organisms together make up your gut microbiome which plays an important role in your body’s functioning. An unhealthy gut microbiome can affect your chances of developing a chronic disease of lifestyle such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease or kidney failure. An unhealthy gut also affects your weight, immune system, mental wellbeing, sleep quality, sports performance and gastrointestinal health.

What does the gut microbiome do?

The gut microbiome is an essential part of human health, as it plays a crucial role in several physiological processes, including:

  • Digestion: breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food, particularly complex carbohydrates and fibre.
  • Metabolism: production of several essential metabolites, such as vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, and neurotransmitters
  • Immune function: development and maintenance of the immune system. It helps regulate the body’s immune response and prevents the growth of harmful bacteria
  • Protection against pathogens: helps protect your body against pathogenic bacteria by producing antimicrobial substances and competing for resources

What is a gut microbiome test and what is its significance?

A gut microbiome test, also known as a microbiome analysis or gut microbiota profiling, is a scientific examination of the composition and diversity of bacteria present in your gut. This test involves the collection of a stool sample, which is then analysed using advanced technologies such as DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. Gut microbiome testing can help you understand the status of your gut health in order to create a personalised approach to improve it. A richer and more diverse gut microbiome can help in preventing chronic diseases of lifestyle as well as improving one’s general mental and physical wellbeing.

Who would benefit from gut microbiome testing?

  • Anyone who is interested in improving their general health and wellbeing
  • People who want to lose weight (to supplement other weight loss initiatives)
  • Athletes looking to improve their performance
  • Patients with gastrointestinal conditions (irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease) and symptoms (diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps)
  • Patients with mood disorders
  • Type 2 diabetics and those with pre-diabetes, insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome
  • Patients with autoimmune diseases and arthritis
  • Patients with sleep disorders

What does the gut microbiome package include?

The package includes the gut microbiome test (performed on a stool sample) together with two consultations with a dietitian, before and after the test is done. These consultations can be conducted either in-person or virtually (video calling). Each client will receive a comprehensive report detailing the health status of their gut microbiome, personalised recommendations on what foods to eat or avoid, and an individualised dietary plan.

What is the sample requirement?

The stool sample is collected conveniently and hygienically using the MGI Easy Stool Sample Collection Kit with preservation solution. The sample needs to be stored in the solution at room temperature and returned to the lab within seven days of collection.

What is the price of the package?

The package is available on self-pay basis only, priced at AED 1,700.
