Hypertension means elevated blood pressure and it is a very common disease. Hypertension can be hereditary or can be a result of external factors. As it does not usually have any warning symptoms many people are not even aware that they have hypertension.
If it remains unnoticed or untreated for a long period of time, it could result in a heart attack or stroke or kidney failure. Thus it is known as the number one silent killer in adults all over the world.
Hypertension is a lifelong condition, requiring a lifelong treatment with medications and lifestyle changes. This includes adopting healthy eating habits and cutting down on fast foods, sugars and red meat. Staying active is also very important in managing this condition through regular exercise routines like walking, relaxation techniques etc.
To avoid hypertension it is advisable to check your blood pressure at least once a year from 18 years of age onwards.
Blood pressure may rise during stressful situations and during exercise, however, if it is high even during rest or nighttime you must consult a doctor as you may be suffering from hypertension. The doctor will thoroughly assess and evaluate you to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension or to reassure you that hypertension is not present.
Remember, a treated and well-controlled hypertension is like defeating hypertension. You will be safe and healthy despite this life-long illness.
Hypertension medication is safe and effective. The medication does not have many side effects and there is no addiction liability with these drugs. However, they must be taken on a regular daily basis.
