Lymphoma cancer is a cancer of the lymphatic system which includes the lymph glands and lymph nodes. This type of cancer affects the infection fighting cells of the immune system which are called lymphocytes.
There are two different types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and all other lymphomas, which are summarised under the term Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a less aggressive type of lymph node cancer. There are aggressive and less aggressive forms among Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.
Although lymphoma cancer causes are unknown, risk factors may include:
- Chronic viral infections such as HIV or hepatitis
- Family history
Symptoms may include:
- Swelling in the lymph nodes
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
Diagnosis:
Lymphoma may be diagnosed using various investigation methods. This may include running blood tests, biopsy and PET scans, among other tests.
Treatment:
The treatment varies and depends on the stage and type of lymph node cancer and may include chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
