Biopsy is a procedure that involves the removal of a sample of cells or tissue from any part of the body. The samples are then sent to the laboratory to run an investigation for the purpose of determining a diagnosis.
Although many imaging tests may depict the presence of masses in certain areas of the body, they do not show whether or not the mass is malignant. For most types, the only way to confirm a diagnosis is to undergo a biopsy procedure.
Different types of biopsies:
- Endoscopic biopsy
- Needle biopsy
- Bone marrow biopsy
- Skin biopsy
- Surgical biopsy
Most biopsies are performed on an outpatient basis. Your doctor will give you full instructions on the type of biopsy required for your case.
