Neurological surgery is the medical speciality concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrovascular system.
The main advancements in neurosurgery occurred in recent times as a result of highly crafted tools and technical advancements. Neurosurgery has embraced minimal invasive techniques, such as endoscopic and endovascular approaches offered by our highly trained staff. Mediclinic’s neurosurgeons have also adopted a multidisciplinary approach with complementary disciplines including interventional neuroradiology and radiotherapy.
Our neurosurgeons in the Neuroscience Centre are using modern neurosurgical technologies, such as The O-arm® and Stealth navigation system which is a mobile high quality intraoperative imaging system providing real time 2D and 3D images. Intraoperative neuro-navigation of the brain and spine is an exciting and extremely accurate method of localising brain and spine lesions. Our neurosurgeons use a dedicated brain navigation system to provide easy and accurate access to brain lesions for both biopsy and removal. Mediclinic also has another dedicated spine navigation system which is used in conjunction with the O-Arm for complex spine surgery including spinal fusion and fixation. Navigation is also vital in endoscopic surgery done through the nostrils to remove pituitary gland tumours.
