“On Feb 04 2020, me and my wife(Kirstine) were blessed with our baby boy - Jake. It happened much earlier than we expected, at only 24 weeks, he was born premature and weighed only 700Grams. We were certainly delighted at his birth but also very anxious not knowing what is going to happen next.

Jake was admitted in the Neonatal intensive Care unit and ventilated right after birth.

 The NICU doctor was monitoring him closely to make sure he gets the best and close replica of a womb. In a few hours he was stabilized and I was comforted by the team that he is in safe hands. The doctor discussed the next steps with us and from there we knew it was going to be a long journey and confident that he is receiving the best care.

From that day on, me and wife visited him every day in the NICU, every time we visit both maternity and NICU unit, the team treated us as family, gave us the much needed moral support and reassurance each time. It was certainly not easy on us especially my wife to see our little boy in all tubes and devices/monitors attached to him, but the team kept reminding us to be positive around him and always kept us updated and informed on the progress he made each day.

Days, weeks, months passed, he kept improving and the doctors kept updating us, of his progress and asked if we have any concerns or queries, they were very welcoming. The feel that the whole team treated our son like he was part of their family gave us a strong positive feeling, because it’s difficult to be positive when you have a preterm baby and watching him every day in an incubator.

After 5 months and couple of weeks, Jake was discharged and ready to go home. The NICU team provided us the option to stay overnight with the baby so we can acquaint ourselves and be comfortable to look after him, clearly their priority was the well-being of the baby and they stuck to that plan.  They wanted to make sure that we are confident and have all the information needed to be able to care for him at home.

On the day of discharge, it was a moment of celebration, the team organized a small farewell celebration for Baby Jake, it was overwhelming.

We had tremendous support from every department. The idea of having Jake being admitted at Mediclinic City Hospital, was the best decision.

“One day at a time”, that was what the doctor said when we sat with him and voiced all our concerns. From that day on, we witnessed miracles unfold each day. We were amazed how such a tiny being could give us so much HOPE in spite of our tired mind and body as we face and overcome different challenges every day. All these things we were able to surpass knowing that our little one is being taken care of by competent professionals. Add to that, the encouragement enclosed with genuine concern from all the NICU staff has uplifted our spirits to continue with the battle. The peace of mind we had was incomparable!

And after 111 days, three surgeries and a lot of prayers, we were finally home!

We will always remember Mediclinic City Hospital NICU as a place that abounds in love. Such level of care and compassion could only come from people who truly love what they do. We salute all the NICU doctors and nurses!

Hamza arrived to the world with a bang on April 23rd 2019. He was born extremely prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing only 900 grams after my water broke unexpectedly one day before. 

Hamza was admitted to the NICU in Mediclinic City Hospital only a few seconds after his birth. And from the first minute, I knew we were blessed to have been here when it happened.

The professionalism and depth of knowledge of the neonatologists (Dr. Abdel Azeem and Dr. Zahereldeen) have been truly astonishing. From day one, they helped educate us on prematurity and what to expect and continuously kept us informed on Hamza’s case. In such a painful time, we found great comfort in their continuous reassurance and watching them cheer Hamza on his daily tiny developments. 

Hamza spent in total 76 days in the NICU, but on day 30, he suffered from an unexplainable infection that was majorly impacting his health. After careful examinations, x-rays and tests, the doctors took the decision to operate and came across one of the rarest cases in the world - an appendicitis at just one month of life! All thanks to the doctor’s call, they managed to save his life before it got any worse. 

As we visited everyday - sometimes twice per day - we found a family in the NICU team. Every single nurse who took care of him was treating him as her own. I admired their patience, warmth and understanding throughout Hamza’s entire stay. They were cheering me on everytime I brought more breastmilk, reassuring me during my midnight frantic calls and even sharing Hamza’s funny moments or little wins. They helped me hold him for the first time - and many subsequent times - and were there for all his big moments. 

After two and a half months, we were able to finally take Hamza home. The team got together and celebrated his NICU graduation. Now a year and a half later and they still check on him! This shows the amount of deep and genuine care the NICU team at Mediclinic City Hospital has.

Thank you Mediclinic City Hospital and the incredible  NICU heroes: doctors and nurses, for saving our son’s life, for taking great care of him until he became a strong healthy baby boy and for helping us complete our family ❤️

Lily was born in January 2016 at 28 weeks and 5 days by emergency c-section due to placenta previa. It was a terrifying time but it helped massively that we were all so well looked after by the wonderful staff at Mediclinic City Hospital NICU. We were so lucky that we brought Lily home after 56 days with no ongoing health issues. She is now a super active four year old, who loves school and dancing. We will be forever grateful to the amazing NICU Ttam for looking after our family.
