Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in Dubai is proud to announce that its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has achieved outstanding rankings in the 2024 Vermont Oxford Network Database, the world’s largest and most comprehensive NICU database. The hospital’s NICU has surpassed international benchmarks, emerging as a leader in neonatal care for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, defined as babies born weighing less than 1500 grams. The data is based on babies admitted to NICU between January 2023 and December 2023.

This year’s data highlights several key achievements that set Mediclinic Parkview Hospital apart on the global stage. The mean length of stay for VLBW infants in the hospital’s NICU is approximately 20 days shorter than the global average, reflecting the effectiveness and efficiency of care.

Remarkably, the NICU achieved a 0% rate of chronic lung disease (CLD), where infants require oxygen support beyond 36 weeks corrected gestational age, a major complication that many NICUs worldwide struggle to manage effectively. Additionally, Mediclinic Parkview Hospital recorded a 0% incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding eye disorder that predominantly affects premature infants.

Furthermore, 100% of the VLBW infants were discharged home on breast milk, an achievement that underscores Mediclinic’s commitment to encouraging breast feeding and providing the best nutritional support for the most vulnerable newborns.

These results are a testament to Mediclinic Parkview Hospital’s continued dedication to providing world-class neonatal care and place the hospital at the forefront of global NICU outcomes.

David Jelley, Hospital Director at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital, remarked,  “The NICU is an important part of our comprehensive maternity service providing a continuum of care from pregnancy through delivery and beyond. At Mediclinic Parkview Hospital we are committed to supporting both mothers and babies at every stage. These exceptional results reflect the hard work, expertise and compassion of our NICU team. We are proud to offer the highest standard of care, ensuring that our tiniest patients have the best possible start in life. Achieving such outstanding outcomes in critical areas like CLD and ROP sets a new benchmark for NICU care worldwide.”

Farah, a patient at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital, whose baby was born premature at 27 weeks, weighing 620 grams and spending 67 days in the NICU, shared her experience, “It was the most terrifying and stressful time of our lives, but the comfort and care from the NICU nurses were incredible. They kept us updated and reassured us every step of the way, making us confident that Talia would be okay. Thanks to their exceptional care, Talia came home after just 67 days, even though she was born three months early. We are forever grateful to the NICU doctors and nurses.”

Dr. Mudit Kumar, Consultant Neonatologist and Head of NICU, added, "This recognition from the Vermont Oxford Network is a significant milestone for us. Our focus on evidence-based practices, advanced technology, and family-centred care has enabled us to achieve these extraordinary outcomes. We will continue to strive for excellence in every aspect of our care, ensuring that every baby who comes through our doors has the best chance at a healthy future."

Mediclinic Parkview Hospital has consistently ranked highly in the Vermont Oxford Network Database since it opened in 2018, and these latest results only solidify its reputation as a global leader in neonatal care.
