Definition

Acute Back pain can develop suddenly but does not last more than 6 weeks. Chronic back pain, usually lasts for more than 3 months, is less common than acute back pain and develops with no discernable reason.

If back pain does not improve or you experience other symptoms, it is advised to seek medical attention as it could indicate an underlying medical issue.

Cause

Usually caused by heavy lifting or injury via fall. It can also be linked to conditions such as:

  • Arthritis or osteoporosis
  • Disk problems
  • Muscle or ligament strains
  • Scoliosis or irregularities in the Spine 

Symptoms

Back pain may present as:

  • Muscle aches
  • Radiating pain (down to legs)
  • Pain that worsens with activity (such as bending, standing, lifting, etc.)
  • Shooting or stabbing quality
  • Pain usually improves when laying down

Diagnosis

Doctors will perform a thorough medical history and may use diagnostic imaging to identify the underlying cause of the back pain. 

Treatment

Back pain tends to improve with rest and time, with no specific intervention required.
