Asthma is an ongoing (chronic) inflammation of small airways in the lungs. This inflammation makes the airways vulnerable to episodes of bronchospasm (constriction of the muscle surrounding the airways) leading to asthma attacks.
Signs and symptoms of asthma attacks in children include any of the following:
- Cough
- Wheezing - a high-pitched, whistle-like sound when exhaling
- Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
- A tight, uncomfortable feeling in the chest
Common triggers of asthma attacks include allergies, colds and exercise.
Early detection and treatment can prevent scary breathing episodes, problems with exercise and emergency department visit.
