During the sweltering summer months, it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration occurs when we use or lose more fluids than we have taken in.
Symptoms:
- Extreme thirst
- Decreased urination
- Dark coloured urine
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Confusion
Common causes:
- Lack of fluid intake
- Vigorous exercise in the heat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Fever
- Increased urination
- Excessive sweating
Prevention:
- If ill with vomiting and/or diarrhea, ensure to intake a large amount of fluids
- Ensure to drink a large amount of water before, during and after exercise to replenish the fluids lost through sweating
- Drink additional water in hot or humid weather to lower your body temperature and replace what is lost through sweating
Make sure to see a doctor immediately if you are feeling irritated, disorientated and more fatigued than normal, especially if this is accompanied with diarrhea and vomiting.
