Not everyone acts the same when social distancing, it depends on the individual’s motivation and knowledge. More than ever, it is crucial that the public get accurate information and not rely on information from social media.
Physical health is essential to maintaining a healthy state of mind. Try to keep yourself reasonably fit and take walks regularly whilst adhering to government guidelines on social distancing. Healthy eating is undoubtedly important when trying to stay healthy. Sleep is another factor that affects our mood, aim to get 7-8 hours of restful sleep each night.
Another important aspect to mental health is to reflect on life. This is really helpful and can help identify your support network and who is important to connect with on a day to day basis. Use this time to think about who your closest friends/family are and who would help you if you were in trouble. The next step is to deliberately increase contact with them, not necessarily in person but through speaking on the phone or social media. It is particularly difficult to communicate current events with children; it is important to give them enough information without scaring them.
Setting and sticking to a routine can help us in times of uncertainty; this is why work is good for us. If you are unable to work from home, give yourself a few tasks and get into a routine. These tasks can be anything that is relevant to your life such as looking after your children, helping others or starting a new project. Ensure you try to get some space if you feel you need it whilst social isolating. This could be done by going for a walk or sitting in different rooms for a break.
The truth is, there is no magical answer when it comes to mental wellbeing. Each person is different but by taking care of ourselves we allow ourselves the opportunity to feel ad do better each day.
